Singapore’s MICE Industry: Shaping the Future as the World’s Best MICE City

The Singapore convention and exhibition industry stands as a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, significantly contributing to its status as a premier global business hub. As part of its drive to establish itself as the world’s best Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) city, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) launched the “World’s Best MICE City” campaign in 2024. This initiative highlights the island’s strengths in hosting innovative and impactful events, solidifying its reputation as a global hub for collaboration, creativity, and sustainable growth.

That same year, the nation achieved a record high in tourism receipts, reaching S$22.4 billion between January and September – marking a 10% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This surge underscores the robust performance of Singapore’s MICE sector, which has been instrumental in attracting international delegates and fostering economic growth.

As we progress into 2025, the sector is poised for further growth, bolstered by strategic government initiatives and a steadfast commitment to sustainability and innovation.

A Growing Industry Poised for Global Leadership

Singapore’s convention and exhibition industry continues to play a pivotal role in the nation’s economy, driven by strong demand for international business events. In 2024, the industry witnessed a steady recovery and growth, marked by increased visitor numbers and event sizes. Notably, Singapore hosted major international events such as the 35th International Nursing Research Congress in July and the 8th Global Botanic Gardens Congress in August, both of which attracted diverse global participants and underscored the city-state’s appeal as a premier MICE destination.

Singapore’s MICE sector is expected to continue its upward trajectory, with projections indicating a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9% from 2023 to 2030, potentially reaching a market size of US$6.97 billion (S$9.3 billion) by 2030. This growth aligns with the anticipated global exhibition industry revenue increase of 18% in 2025, reflecting broader industry trends.

Several factors contribute to the sector’s robust performance, including Singapore’s strategic location, advanced infrastructure, and government-led initiatives aimed at enhancing industry competitiveness. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has introduced key programmes to support sustainable and innovative event practices, such as the STB Legacy Toolkit and the MICE Venue Sustainability Playbook for guiding stakeholders in delivering events that are both impactful and environmentally responsible.

Overall, the Singapore convention and exhibition industry is well-positioned for sustained growth – supported by strategic initiatives, evolving market demands, and a commitment to sustainability. As the industry moves deeper into 2025, it is expected to continue attracting global events and driving economic contributions, reinforcing Singapore’s status as a premier destination for international business gatherings.

Recent Successes and What’s Next for Singapore’s MICE Industry

Over the past year, the MICE sector reached significant milestones, reaffirming its position as a leading global hub for business events.

Among the key highlights was the Singapore MICE Forum (SMF) 2024, which attracted over 400 MICE professionals and featured insights from more than 30 industry leaders – with themes that focused on artificial intelligence, sustainability, talent development, community engagement, sales and marketing, and other pivotal matters. Similarly, MICE Show Asia 2024 was hosted at the same venue and provided a robust platform for exhibitors and attendees to explore the latest trends and innovations – solidifying Singapore’s role as a global connector in the events industry.

Throughout 2025, Singapore’s MICE calendar has delivered further growth and engagement. The Business of Events Conference, organised by the Professional Convention Management Association Asia Pacific (PCMA APAC), delved into the evolving dynamics of the events industry and offered professionals a platform to exchange knowledge and strategies. Complementing this event was The Meetings Show Asia Pacific, which took place later the same week and provided additional opportunities for industry networking and collaboration.

The STB continues to play a crucial role in driving the industry forward through targeted initiatives. The aforementioned “World’s Best MICE City” campaign aims to elevate Singapore’s global profile by attracting high-impact events that foster innovation, sustainability, and collaboration – cementing its reputation as a premier destination for business gatherings.

Additionally, in November 2024, STB introduced the world’s first global sustainability standard specifically tailored for attractions – the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Attraction Criteria. This initiative aims to establish a unified understanding of sustainable practices, with certification applications set to open in early 2026. Alongside this, the launch of the MICE Venue Sustainability Playbook provides a comprehensive guide to help venues adopt greener practices, aligning with the broader objectives of the Singapore Green Plan 2030.

Collectively, these developments underscore Singapore’s proactive approach to strengthening its MICE industry, ensuring it remains competitive, innovative, and sustainable in the evolving global landscape.

Driving Sustainability Through Regulation and Innovation

Singapore’s MICE sector has seen positive regulatory developments in recent years, particularly in sustainability and environmental responsibility. Starting from the fiscal year of 2025, the government is assessing the sustainability credentials of companies bidding for MICE tenders – underscoring the nation’s commitment to integrating sustainability into multiple facets of the MICE industry.

A cornerstone of the sector’s sustainability efforts is the MICE Sustainability Roadmap, introduced by STB and the Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (SACEOS). This strategic plan aims to position Singapore as a leading sustainable MICE destination in the Asia-Pacific region by 2030. The roadmap focuses on establishing sustainability standards, achieving certifications, and promoting decarbonisation within the industry. A key milestone in this journey is the Singapore MICE Sustainability Certification (MSC), launched at the beginning of 2024. This certification equips businesses with the necessary tools to adopt sustainable practices in events – elevating overall sustainability standards across Singapore’s convention and exhibition industry.

To further assist venues in implementing eco-friendly practices, STB released the MICE Venue Sustainability Playbook in late 2024. This comprehensive guide provides actionable strategies for venues to enhance their sustainability efforts, aligning with the broader objectives of the Singapore Green Plan 2030.

In addition to these initiatives, the Tourism Sustainability Programme (TSP) was introduced to support tourism businesses at various stages of their sustainability journey. The TSP focuses on building workforce capabilities and developing innovative solutions to capture opportunities arising from the increasing demand for sustainable travel.

These regulatory advancements are complemented by technological innovations that are transforming event experiences, enhancing both operational efficiency and attendee engagement.

How Technology is Evolving Singapore’s MICE Industry

The Singapore government has played a vital role in supporting technological advancements within the MICE sector. Specifically, their Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) 2025 plan, with an investment of S$28 billion, is set to drive advancements in AI, robotics, and information and communications technology (ICT) – providing the MICE industry with new opportunities to leverage deep-tech solutions.

Additionally, the growing adoption of digital tools such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) is transforming event formats worldwide. These technologies offer immersive experiences that bridge the gap between physical and digital participation – enabling virtual site inspections, interactive exhibitor booths, and remote engagement, which help expand the reach of events. For event organisers in Singapore, this opens the doors for engaging overseas participants, without the need for travel.

Building on these technological advancements, Singapore is also investing in infrastructure developments to support the growing demand for world-class business events and conferences.

Singapore’s Vision: Building a Sustainable and Connected MICE Future

Building on the foundations of the MICE Sustainability Roadmap, Singapore aims to position itself as one of the most sustainable MICE destinations in the Asia-Pacific region. This long-term strategy focuses on setting sustainability standards, achieving industry-wide certifications, and promoting decarbonisation, aligning with both the Singapore Green Plan 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

To accommodate growing demand for top-tier MICE venues, several major infrastructure projects are underway. A key development is the planned expansion of Marina Bay Sands, which features a fourth tower and a state-of-the-art 15,000-seat entertainment arena designed to enhance Singapore’s capacity for large-scale business events and conferences. Construction is expected to be completed by July 2029.

Similarly, Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) is undergoing a multi-phase expansion, including enhancements to visitor attractions such as Minion Land at Universal Studios Singapore and the expanded Singapore Oceanarium – both of which are expected to attract international visitors and support Singapore’s appeal as a destination for business and leisure events.

Alongside these infrastructure developments, the Singapore government offers strategic programmes that further support the growth of the MICE industry, ensuring that both physical venues and event services meet the evolving needs of organisers and delegates.

One such initiative is the Singapore MICE Advantage Programme (SMAP), which helps attract key events by providing a range of benefits that enhance both event logistics and delegate experiences. Fully funded by participating industry partners such as Singapore Airlines Limited, Changi Airport Group (Singapore) Pte Ltd, and Sentosa Development Corporation, SMAP offers privileges that include discounts on travel logistics and tourist experiences in Singapore. This initiative aligns with the broader goals of the “World’s Best MICE City” campaign, through which Singapore is enhancing its physical infrastructure, while advancing its digital and sustainable capabilities.

Singapore’s MICE calendar for 2025 is poised to further strengthen its global standing through key industry events. One notable event is The Meetings Show Asia Pacific (TMS APAC) 2025, a premier B2B trade show that features a comprehensive education programme covering critical topics such as macro trends, event design, technology, sustainability, workforce development, and wellness. Additionally, MICE Show Asia 2025 is set to bring together industry suppliers, professionals, and innovators to foster connections and collaborations that will drive the future of the MICE industry in the Asia-Pacific region.

By investing in sustainable practices, expanding its event infrastructure, and hosting pivotal industry gatherings, Singapore is well-positioned to maintain its status as a leading global hub for business events.

The Road Ahead: Singapore’s MICE Industry Leading Global Growth

Looking ahead, Singapore is set to strengthen its global standing as the “World’s Best MICE City” through proactive government initiatives, forward-looking sustainable practices, and world-class facilities that reinforce its status as a leading destination for international events.

As the industry continues evolving, stakeholders are encouraged to embrace innovation, sustainability, and strategic partnerships to capitalise on emerging opportunities – leveraging the city-state’s strategic location and spirit of excellence to deliver experiences that inspire, connect, and leave a lasting legacy.
