to encourage the shipping community to adopt eco-friendly ship designs and technologies, use cleaner fuels and better manage their operations. Following industry support, the MSGI was further enhanced and extended till 31 December 2019. Currently, there are five programmes under the MSGI:
Green Ship Programme
• Encourages Singapore-flagged ships to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions
• Under this programme, ships that qualify will enjoy a reduction of their initial registration fees and a rebate on their annual tonnage tax
Green Port Programme
• Encourages ocean-going ships calling at the Port of Singapore to reduce the emission of pollutants
• Under this programme, ships that qualify will enjoy a reduction of port dues
Green Technology Programme
• Encourages local maritime companies to develop and adopt eco-friendly technologies that reduce the emission of pollutants
• Under this programme, projects may receive grants up to 50% of total qualifying costs. Projects that can achieve more than 20% reduction in emission levels are eligible for a higher grant cap of up to S$3 million per project
Green Awareness Programme
(Launched in July 2016 as part of the enhancements to MSGI)
• Encourages the maritime industry to
explore possible avenues towards
sustainable, clean and green shipping
• Under this programme, SGX-listed maritime companies in Singapore will be provided with financial assistance for using world standards in their
sustainability reports
Green Energy Programme
(Launched in July 2016 as part of the enhancements to MSGI)
• Encourages the adoption of alternative
or cleaner marine fuels in the Port of Singapore
With Singapore’s commitment to join international efforts in making shipping cleaner and greener, many maritime companies have participated in the above programmes and the results have been promising. For instance, more than 330 vessels were enrolled under the Green Ship Programme and over 4,000 vessel calls switched to marine fuel of not more than 1% of sulphur content under the Green Port Programme.
Other than promoting environmentally- friendly shipping and port activities, MPA has also supported and worked
