in partnership with marine experts and public volunteers to conserve local coral colonies around Sultan Shoal Lighthouse during the development of the new Tuas Terminal. To date, 2,300 coral colonies have been relocated to three sites at St John’s Island and Sisters’ Islands. Coral nurseries have also been set up at Lazarus Island and Kusu Island to grow coral fragments which would eventually be transplanted to degraded reef areas and non-reef areas for reef rehabilitation to enhance the coral biodiversity in Singapore.
Forging Vital Links amongst Industry Players
Maritime Singapore has many special qualities, chief among which is the camaraderie within the maritime community. Even as companies compete, they have found common grounds on which they can co-operate to advance their shared interests.
By working together, often through industry associations such as SMF, SSA, ASMI and Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI), much has been achieved in boosting the capabilities of the existing workforce, and raising the safety, health and environmental standards within the industry.
Association of Singapore Marine Industries
ASMI is a non-profit association formed in 1968 to promote the interests of the marine and offshore engineering industry, a key contributor to the economy of Singapore. Its membership encompasses the broad cross- section of the marine and offshore industry, including shipyards, manufacturers and suppliers of marine & offshore equipment and components. ASMI members also comprise marine & offshore engineering companies, marine consultant and contractors as well as classification societies.
Singapore Shipping Association
SSA represents a wide spectrum of shipping companies and other businesses allied to the shipping industry. SSA has been appointed executive seats, and co-operates with other regional and international shipping organisations to protect the marine environment and promote freedom and safety at sea.
To achieve its objectives, SSA engages and collaborates with the shipping industry key stakeholders and is a trusted advisor and partner to related government agencies.
