SINGAPORE MARITIME SERVICES GUIDE 2017/2018
Gateway to Asia
ituated along the east-west arterial route, Singapore’s geographical location is ideal for shipping and
trade. Today, Singapore is the world’s busiest container transhipment hub, and has the fifth largest ship registry in the world. With its transparent and solid legal system, as well as political and economic stability, Singapore is also fast becoming Asia’s hub for maritime law and arbitration.
Singapore plays host to over 5,000 maritime establishments which contribute to 7% of the nation’s gross domestic product, and employs more than 170,000 people. Within this thriving maritime eco- system are companies involved in ship owning, managing, broking, port services, law, finance, insurance, arbitration, testing and certification. The breadth of shipping- related services coupled with the ease of doing business and experienced manpower have propelled Singapore to the top slot in international maritime rankings.
For three consecutive years, 2014 to 2016, Singapore was ranked as the top international shipping centre and port city based on the Xinhua – Baltic International Shipping Centre Development Index Report. The index ranks the performance of major ports based on three primary indicators: maritime services, business environment and port conditions. Singapore was also voted as the top maritime capital out of 15 maritime cities based on competencies in shipping, finance and law, technology and port and logistics.
