Funds for the scholarship were pledged by 19 organisations in the maritime industry, including shipping lines, shipyards and maritime service companies. The scholars were able to choose from 24 degree courses offered by local and overseas universities, as well as four maritime diploma programmes at the Singapore Maritime Academy in the Singapore Polytechnic and Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Since 2007, a total of 275 MaritimeONE scholarships worth more than S$7.3 million have been awarded to outstanding students to pursue courses in Singapore and overseas.
During the ceremony, 16 scholarships were also offered under the Tripartite Maritime Scholarship (TMSS) programme, jointly awarded by MPA, shipping companies, the Singapore
Maritime Officers’ Union and the Singapore Organisation of Seamen. This brings the sum total of scholarships awarded by the maritime industry in 2016 to over S$2 million.
Maritime Singapore Connect (MSC) Office – Central Access Point for Students and Jobseekers
The Maritime Singapore Connect (MSC) Office is part of a SkillsFuture Initiative by the MPA to address manpower and talent needs.
Started in 2016, the unit under SMF is a national initiative to profile the maritime industry serves as a central node to connect multiple stakeholders for maritime opportunities.
The MSC website (www.maritimesgconnect. com) is a one-stop source of information on maritime education, training and careers for students, job seekers and the general public.
The MSC Office also organises various activities for different target audiences. These include the MSC Career Workshop for tertiary students looking to gain industry insights on maritime careers, the MSC Maritime Insights Forum for career coaches working with students and job seekers, and the MSC Connexions Forum, which brings maritime employers, schools and government agencies together to address manpower issues.
